The
move from poet to writer feels akin to becoming an adult. I carry the
concise images and musical language of poetry where ever I go. For me,
poetry has its roots in the visceral experience. Often the listener will
have an understanding she can’t explain, a response beyond the logical
mind. In the world of poetry, connecting all the dots, providing all the
details between images, isn’t necessary. In prose, creative non-fiction,
memoir, personal essay, fiction, the details are linked to create a logical
thread. The writer supports a thesis or plot. I once fought the time it
requires to slow down and present a logical argument but now, combined
with the tools of poetic craft, I welcome the challenge and recognize
that some material demands to be prose.
